Become a Sister

"Cherish God’s vocation in you: let it be constant, efficacious, and loving."
                                                                                           Mary Ward

We invite you to experience the joy of IBVM life

Grounded in God
Graced by the friendship of Jesus and Mary
Guided by the Spirit
Engaged in the world

The formation process includes the following five phases:

Inquiry
You are welcome to get to know the community through contact with the Director of Vocation Ministry or any IBVM Sisters you meet. This is a time to pray and listen to God’s call to you and deepen your relationship with God. You may consider meeting with someone who can help you discern how God is calling you.

Candidacy
When you feel ready, you may apply for Candidacy. During Candidacy you continue to live your normal life of work, study, friends, etc. A Director of Candidacy will accompany you to meet Sisters and you may live with them for a time. Candidacy time is generally about two years.

Novitiate
Novitiate is also a two-year period. It is a time for deeper personal prayer and spiritual growth. As a novice you learn about the vows, scriptures, ministry experiences, and a wealth of experience from the community. The Ignatian Spiritual Exercises are essential in the life of the IBVM. This is a precious time to grasp the spirit Mary Ward and her charism.

Temporary Profession
If you feel that God is calling you to the IBVM, you make First Vows. These vows of poverty, chastity and obedience are made for a specific period of time. You will move into a community and may continue your studies or begin a ministry.   Temporary Profession lasts for at least six years.

Final Profession
Throughout the years  of Temporary Professionyou have grown in maturity, understanding, and freedom of spirit. You may feel God is calling you to this way life and you have the gifts and abilities to live it. With the support of the IBVM community and all who have nourished you, you profess Final Vows to God and commit yourself to "God’s Vocation in you".
